Welcome! I’m a Geography/Planning Professor Emeritus from Appalachian State University (ASU). This site is a work-in-progress where I’m excited to share my writings and photos from around the world!
I am finally able to add this awesome book to my web site; whatever you wish to know about our beloved state of North Carolina – this is where you will find it, though the most recent census data is 2000, so a bit dated. But the details of all of our diversity in weather and climate, in water resources, and environmental quality and land conservation, as well as our varied economy, and rather incredible diversity of people in their urban and rural settings from the coast to the mountains – it is all here!! Have a look. Pages provided by the Department of Geography and Planning at Appalachian State University also include review by leading North Carolinians, newspapers and professional journals.

Around the World in 60 Days, Volume II
This is volume II of our recent travels. Volume I took us from the USA over Glasgow and Southampton where we began our cruise journey with the Holland-America Line to Singapore. Volume I details events including stops in Lisbon, Tangier, Malaga, Malta, Luxor, Muscat, Dubai, Goa, Mangalore, and the Indian Backwaters at Cochin.
This volume begins with the Andaman Islands and from there to Rangoon, Phuket Island, and Singapore where we ended with HAL, spent a week and flew to Hanoi where we were for eight days. En route home we stopped briefly in Tokyo, Hawaii, and Phoenix. Everywhere we are in search of a sense of place embodied in the character of the integrated cultural and physical landscape. Related observations are accompanied by photos and other illustrations.

Around the World in 60 Days, Volume I
A kaleidoscope of land and seascapes plus a myriad of human ethnicities are unfolding as we we fly, cruise, river boat, kayak, and walk across the earth’s surface over 60 glorious days. We traveled mostly in the equatorial regions during the northern hemisphere winter months of January and February. With the help of local friends we explore in greater detail the countries of the United Arab Emirate, Singapore and Vietnam. My approach here is by use of a daily journal and related photos on a near daily basis from January 6 to March 5, 2016. This is Volume I of two volumes.

Ole’s and Ane’s gradual engaging with Madeiran wines over the past 20+ years; 4. the what and where of the critical species contributing to the various wines, including consideration of the smallholder farmer, the producers, and the distributors; 5. details on our 2012 visits to eight fortified wine producers, and two producers of table wines; and 6. comments on issues and new directions in Madeiran wines.
